General questions

Frequently asked questions

What is Home Energy Loan Scotland?

Home Energy Loan Scotland is a trading style of Scottish Energy Efficiency. We arrange no-obligation surveys and quotes for home energy upgrades across Scotland, including solar panels, battery storage, air source heat pumps and new heating systems. Installation is carried out by our MCS-certified partner installer.

Do you offer any subsidies?

We quote for paid installations only. Loans are available, subject to status, to help you spread the cost, and a representative example is provided with any quote.

What does "loans available, subject to status" mean?

It means that finance may be available to help you spread the cost of your installation, subject to your circumstances and a suitability assessment. We do not publish rates or loan amounts on this website. A representative example is provided with any quote so you can see how the finance works.

Is there any obligation when I request a survey?

None at all. From your first call through to the survey and quote, you are under no obligation. The survey and quote are provided so you can make an informed decision. You only proceed if you choose to.

Who carries out the installation?

We install through MCS-certified partners. Scottish Energy Efficiency arranges the survey and quote, and our partner installer carries out the installation to MCS standard. You have one point of contact throughout.

Where are you based?

We are based at Unit 3 Prospect III, Prospect Business Centre, Dundee DD2 1TY. We arrange surveys for homeowners across the whole of Scotland — see our Areas Covered page for the regions we cover.

About the installations

Frequently asked questions

What can I have installed?

We arrange surveys and quotes for solar panels (photovoltaic), battery storage, air source heat pumps and new heating systems. You can have one of these installed or combine several — for example, solar panels with battery storage, or a heat pump with upgraded controls.

Is 0% VAT available on solar panels and batteries?

Yes. A reduced rate of 0% VAT applies to the installation of solar panels and battery storage in domestic properties until 31 March 2027. Your quote will reflect the VAT rate that applies at the time.

Can a heat pump replace my gas or oil boiler?

An air source heat pump can replace or supplement a gas or oil boiler. Whether it is the right choice depends on your home's insulation, radiator sizing and heat loss. Your survey covers all of these so we can recommend the most suitable upgrade for your property.

Do I need battery storage if I have solar panels?

Not necessarily, but many homeowners choose to add a battery. A battery lets you store the electricity your panels generate during the day and use it in the evening, when you are more likely to be at home. Your survey covers whether a battery makes sense for your setup.

Can I combine several upgrades in one installation?

Yes. Combining solar panels with battery storage is common, and some homeowners pair a heat pump with solar to run their heating on home-generated electricity. Tell us what you have in mind and we can survey for a combined upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

What are the loan rates?

We do not publish rates or loan amounts on this website. Loans are available, subject to status, and a representative example is provided with any quote so you can see the full details before you decide.

Do I have to use the finance?

No. Finance is an option to help you spread the cost, but you are under no obligation to take it up. Some customers choose to pay in full, and some choose to spread the cost — it is entirely your decision.

Will I see a representative example before I decide?

Yes. A representative example is provided with any quote. This shows you how the finance works, alongside the tailored quote for the recommended work, so you have the full picture before you decide whether to proceed.

Are there any loan amounts or rates on this website?

No. We do not publish loan amounts or rates on this website, because the right arrangement depends on your circumstances and the scope of your installation. A representative example is provided with your quote.
